Birmingham VA Primary Care Annex

Birmingham, AL

Project Description

This three-story Primary Care Annex provides non-critical primary care to veterans in Alabama while serving as an example of architecture that is aesthetically pleasing, provides a therapeutic environment for patients and blends with the area but has many features that distinguishes it from its surroundings. The 68,000-square-foot facility houses ambulatory care, women’s clinic, pharmacy, radiology, physical therapy, audiology, prosthetics and a blood draw lab.

The LEED for Healthcare Silver-certified design makes a visual statement that embodies its function as a build-to-suit modern medical facility. The annex is located on the north, and flatter, part of the site, to facilitate easy service access with a level loading dock off 7th Avenue. The 2,300 car parking garage is located on the south side of the site and provides parking for the VA’s Birmingham Hospital that is six blocks away. The lowest two levels of the garage are buried below street level, resulting in what appears to be a six-story garage facing University Boulevard.
